The Psychology of Colours

The artist Pablo Picasso had once famously remarked, “Colours, like features, follow the changes of the emotions."

We have learnt that colours are either primary or secondary. And everything else is just their shades and hues. But what we are not taught is that the psychology of colours goes way beyond what meets the eye. It goes beyond the widely taught colour theory classifications. That is to say that each colour has its own meaning, values, and occasions.

The Emotions Behind Colours

Red – sexy, provocative and demands attention. Emotionally intense, it reflects a series of emotions which grabs the eye and builds recognition. Date night plans, ladies? Red is your colour. It exonerates passion and energy and gets the heart rate and blood pressure going!

Green – invokes the sense of security. Both stemming from the earth we live on, and the power of money. A darker green, as mysterious as it may be, could communicate greed and jealousy.

Blue – The embodiment of calm and tranquility. It makes you feel secure, dependable, and trustworthy. Blue is seen to be one of the best colours to wear to a first day of work, or at a big client meeting. It makes you look serene and at ease at first glance – days that are all about that first impression.

Purple – a royal and sophisticated colour. It is the combination of red and blue. A regal cross between attention grabbing, yet a calming presence. If purple is your favourite colour, it might signify that you have an artistic, thoughtful, and intuitive side.

Black - Black relates to power, elegance, and death. It’s sophisticated, timeless, and prestigious. According to German scientist Hermann von Helmholz, "Black is real sensation, even if it is produced by the entire absence of light. The sensation of black is distinctly different from the lack of all sensation."
